The experience

What to expect

Journey into northern Cambodia's forest to explore Koh Ker, capital of the Khmer Empire for a brief but remarkable period in the 10th century. The archaeological landscape preserves temples, shrines, reservoirs, roads, and traces of an ambitious royal city organized around monumental sacred architecture.

Climb the wooden stairway beside the seven-tiered Prasat Thom pyramid for views over the forest, then continue to atmospheric satellite temples such as Prasat Pram and other sanctuaries known for powerful architectural forms and once-monumental sculpture.

Koh Ker is in Preah Vihear Province and requires substantial road travel from Siem Reap. The official park pass is US$15 and entry hours are listed as 06:00–18:30. Carry water, sun protection, and sturdy footwear; stay on marked paths and do not touch carvings.
