The experience

What to expect

Drive about 15–16 kilometres south of Siem Reap to the Chong Kneas pier, then board a licensed boat through the village channel and out onto Tonlé Sap Lake. Floating and stilted homes, boats and local livelihoods shift with the lake’s exceptional wet- and dry-season changes.

Official boat tickets are purchased at the Chong Kneas counter, generally open while tours operate from about 5:00 AM to 5:30 PM. International visitor prices start at US$28 for a small boat carrying up to five people and US$38 for six to eight. Visit respectfully: avoid intrusive photography, do not treat homes as exhibits, and choose community-conscious stops.
