Lake Bangkong Ceremonial Fishing Event 2026
Thousands joined Bangkong villagers for the 2026 Leung Meak community fishing ceremony, using traditional nets and bamboo gear to catch about eight tonnes of fish.
What to expect
The annual Leung Meak fish-catching ceremony took place on 8 February 2026 at the protected Boeung Bangkong in Bangkong village, Siem Reap province. The event marked the end of the rice-harvest season and prepared food for the village’s Lerng Meak spiritual ceremonies.
A fireworks signal opened fishing at 7:00 AM. Villagers and visitors entered the lake with traditional nets, baskets and handmade bamboo equipment; the Ministry of Agriculture estimated a catch of about eight tonnes. The tradition preserves Angkor-region cultural heritage, supports community ties and is followed by Lerng Meak ceremonies on 9–10 February. Participants are expected to protect the environment, maintain hygiene and follow local instructions.
